Learning through Grandchildren.

Welcome to my Website Posted on Wed, October 21, 2020 16:42:03

Choosing toys for my toyshop is always difficult, but just recently I have been able to watch how my two granddaughters play (albeit over zoom and FaceTime), In fact I am learning quite a lot about children’s development whilst I’m having fun.

They are both over 12 months now and they have changed enormously over that time, the first few months soft toys, rattles, colours and sounds were very important, but now they are more into building, stacking, problem solving and role play already.

So I have found that my decisions about choosing toys are actually based on the children’s natural development , which takes a lot of the hard work away from me..

I try to buy toys that are fun and have longevity, all the baby toys can continue to be played with ie: the knitted dinosaurs are fabulous at any age, the natural rubber toys are great for teething and for playing with at bath time, the rag dolls are friends for life and the wooden toys can be handed down to siblings and passed on to others, after they’ve had plenty of play.

Sustainable toys, sensory toys and most of all play time toys, but these toys also have an added value because they look lovely too, toys to be on display rather than hidden in a toy box.

Take care and have fun playing.

Seven reasons why wooden toys are great.

Seven reasons to invest in wooden toys for your children
Wooden toys are quiet!

From an article I found in
2 June 2019

There are so many tech toys on the market to choose from for your baby, many boasting bells and whistles – each one claiming to work wonders for your child and promising to satisfy all their developmental needs. But one type of toy that’s endured for decades is good old-fashioned wooden toys. Here are seven reasons why we believe they’ve stood the test of time.

They last

Wooden Toys Last
Children are tough on toys. They throw them bite them, smash them together – all an important part of the sensory development process. But a good quality wooden toy will survive the assault, all be it with a few scratches and scuffs, is easily cleanable and will last for generations to come.

Wooden Toys Fuel the Imagination

The simplicity of wooden toys is their real advantage. They don’t tell your child what to do – enabling a blank canvas. Encouraging them to arrange simple wooden blocks by size, shape and colour is a great way for them to develop their burgeoning imaginations.

Wooden Toys are Quiet
A boon for parents who are maxed out with music, computer generated voices and flashing lights. The only noise parents will hear is the sound of their children’s voices and laughter as they learn and interact with their wooden toys.

Wooden toys are Safe

But do be choosy. They may cost a little more but it’s important to invest in those that are made from sustainable materials and free from chemicals.

Wooden Toys Build Fine Motor Skills

The tactile nature of wood will encourage your child to touch, feel and explore. Babies and toddlers can work on different ways of grasping and manipulating a simple block of wood to get it to do what they need it to do.

Wooden Toys Never Run out of Batteries

The best thing about wooden toys, apart from their eco-credentials, is the fact that they never run out of batteries.

Wooden toys simply go on and on and on, through generations of families.

So get down on the floor with your child and indulge in some traditional, plastic-free play together. You won’t regret it.

I saw this article and thought that it covered most reasons why wooden toys are the best, they certainly do last the test of time as we as a family still have some toys that must be over 30 years old and are still going strong, even with a few bashes and chips.

Enjoy what’s left of Sunday,

Lots of lovely new clothes on their way .

Welcome to my Website Posted on Wed, May 01, 2019 19:17:20

Hello all,

I am just so excited to be able to report that I have some new clothes arriving shortly, they are Organic Cotton which is great, but they also come from two Companies who have lovely ethos behind their brands.

Pigeon Organics whose motto is ‘designed with style sustainability and social responsibility at heart,’ which just about covers everything I believe in and their clothes are gorgeous and Kite Clothing who are based on the beautiful coast of Dorset where I personally spent many a happy childhood holiday, and they are a planet-friendly clothing brand for children.

I can’t wait for my orders to arrive and obviously Sophie-Lily will be testing them so I will be able to make personal recommendations which is always a good idea.

I think the term planet friendly sums it all up, not only are these clothes the best for the little ones where no chemicals have been used but they are much healthier for the cotton farmers and their families too but the fact that we can trace from the field to the consumer has to be a bonus.

I hope that you all like my choice of clothes, I am concentrating on Baby clothes at the moment.

lots of love

Baby Clothes

Welcome to my Website Posted on Sat, April 20, 2019 14:26:08

Having just become a new Grandmother it made me very aware of how important good clothing is for new babies, so I set off exploring the baby ranges out there and there are loads to choose from, most of them are good too.

I then came across Piccalilly Organic Cotton Clothing, this Company hales from the Yorkshire Dales and produces quality Organic Cotton clothes from a small project called Chetna Organic.

In 2008 Chetna became the first cotton farmers organisation in India to receive Fair-trade Certification, all the cotton is grown by small marginal farmers without the use of child labour, chemicals and GMO’s.

Its a fair-trade cotton programme with a mission to improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers by making their farm systems more sustainable and profitable.

The Chetna farmers also own a 10% equity stake in the factory who make the clothes and the cotton farmers are pre-financed and guaranteed stable cotton prices and a premium to spend within their local community.

So not only do they make fabulous Organic clothing, which is obviously much better next to new baby skin but without the use of nasty chemicals its healthier for the farmers and the eco system too.

Its Fair trade so everyone involved with the garments receive living wages and in this case there are extra benefits including free lunches, healthcare and funding towards education.

No children were involved in the making of these clothes and the whole process has complete traceability down to the farmers field it has been grown in.

The whole process is also eco friendly which in the long run is great for our next generation too

I have personally tried and tested these beautiful clothes on little Sophie-Lily so they come with a big tick from me too.

Recipes for fun

Welcome to my Website Posted on Fri, August 03, 2018 14:31:58

Here are a few ideas for keeping everyone busy.

When my children were small I remember searching for ideas to help pass the time which were inexpensive and fun.

Children of all ages love this.

Mix Cornflour in a bowl with water until it becomes thick, so you can still pour it but feels solid under pressure. Put it in a washing up bowl or straight on to a tray/table and allow the children to explore the texture, different toys can be added for children to play or haircombs to make patterns with.
This used to keep my children entertained for ages and it is easy to wash up afterwards.
You can always add food colouring if wanted.

1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
food colouring
1 Cup flour

Mix water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food colouring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
Remove from the heat and add the flour.
Stir, then knead until smooth.
Store the dough in an air tight container.

The Cream of Tartar makes this dough last for 6 months at least so don’t forget to add it

Marbled paper.

Mix a small amount of vegetable oil with some drops of food colouring and mix well.
Make a few pots of different colours.
Take a pie dish or something similar and cover the base with water and then add drops of the coloured mixture to it,add a couple of different colours, you will see lots of bubbles appear on the surface of the water, take a piece of card or thicker paper and place on the surface of the water, lift it off and hang to dry.
Lots of pretty marbled paper on the washing line always looks good and then when dry the children have pretty pictures or they can use them as invitations to parties or to write letters on (if we still write them).

This was always one of my favourite games to play.

Hope that you all have fun xxxx

Baby Toys

Welcome to my Website Posted on Thu, June 14, 2018 19:18:24

I have just taken delivery of some beautiful handcrafted toys and rattles for little ones, these are from Companies who look after their staff and ensure that their workplace environment is safe and the company that makes Pebble toys – Hathay Bunano – was started back in 2004 by Samantha Morshead MBE. On moving to Bangladesh she loved its vibrancy and energy but also saw that it was a place of incredible poverty. With a vision of bringing sustainable and flexible employment to rural and disadvantaged women she started teaching them knitting and crocheting skills and Hathay Bunano was born.

Hathay Bunano provides fairly paid, good quality, flexible and local employment for rural women who are poor and often disadvantaged.
Hathay Bunano means hand made or hand knitted .
when you buy one of these beautifully handcrafted Toys you are helping the artisans support their families.
More about the Companies I use next time.
Hope you are all having a happy time. Take a look at my online shop to see some of these fabulous toys.

all the best

Children’s Bath Toys

Welcome to my Website Posted on Fri, April 13, 2018 15:23:31

Natural Rubber Children’s Bath Toys, not only do they look fabulous they are fun, tactile have many uses, eco-friendly, hand made and they are safer too.

There has been a lot of news just recently about what was lurking in the plastic bath toys but now its actually been scientifically proven too.

The Study was conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology ETH Zurich and the University of Illinois.

When they cut open some childrens bath toys they discovered that some potentially harmful bacteria was being harboured including Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the latter generally being linked with hospital infections.

So when Best Years Ltd brought out their natural rubber dinosaurs I had to have some, not only are they more environmentally friendly than plastic they have no holes in so no nasties can be lurking but they also are hand made from natural rubber, great for teething, fabulous for Bath times and so much better for our environment.
Win Win all round.
They are one of my Best Sellers too.
